Presentation by Dr. Grimaldos at the XXVVIII Congress of the Spanish Society of Surgical Medical Laser (SELMQ) 2021

Dr. Grimaldos presented the advances, work and successes of the Eyecos Clinic’s eye colour change at the XXVIII edition of the Congress of the Spanish Society of Surgical Medical Laser (SELMQ) held in Malaga. The Scientific Committee considered that Dr. Grimaldos’ presentation was worthy of the Best Oral Communication Award of the Congress.

In these 10 years of research we have developed different innovative products based on preliminary clinical studies where we have analysed the effect of 4 different lasers for iris pigmentation change. This technique led to the implementation of different mobile applications to measure the quality of the iris from the patient’s home, predict the result of the treatment and simulate the final appearance. We have also implemented a genetic test to find out which genes each patient has, an iris scanner with three modules, two softwares to analyse the iris in terms of colourimetry and another to plan the treatment, and a safety system with three parameters: the maximum intraocular pressure, the trabecular blocking factor and the clearing curve.

Our treatment protocol starts with a medical history of the patient in order to rule out candidates with glaucoma, chronic ocular diseases, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, etc. This is followed by a general and specific eye examination, a 3D prediction of the result (iris reaction to the light and distance), informed consent and planning of the treatment phases.

The results after 10 years of application suggest that it is an effective, safe and predictable method. However, it is a sequential technique that requires treatment phases to visualise the results. We have achieved that in grades 1, 2 and 3 (low pigmentation) this procedure can be performed in a single four-day phase. Despite this, in dark eyes we need between 2 and 3 phases for success, and even with touch-ups.Another remarkable achievement in the procedure has been to reduce the time of the laser session to between one and one and a half minutes.

This method is painless, it does not cause pain or inflammation. However, it is a sequential technique that requires treatment phases to visualise the results. This method is painless, it does not cause pain or inflammation. We do not use contact or anaesthesia during the process. As an outpatient technique, the patient can lead a normal life without any effort. Vision and eye pressure remain normal during all phases. The results are visible between 2 and 4 weeks, increasing patient satisfaction.

The study is currently in a new phase of innovation to ensure that this procedure is performed in a single phase, lasting between twenty and thirty seconds.
